7th Annual Kosherfest Culinary Competition...Meet the Competitors

The Center for Kosher Culinary Arts is proud to present the 7th annual Kosherfest Culinary Competition!

Kosherfest, an annual kosher-certified products trade show, will be held at the Meadowlands Exposition Center on November 11th & 12th. Join CKCA on  the second day of the event at 12pm in the front of the exhibit hall to cheer on your favorite chef!

Three professional chefs will compete in a culinary battle using ingredients from a mystery basket to produce mouth-watering dishes. Their plates will be judged based on creativity, presentation and taste by a panel of culinary industry professionals. The winner will take home $1000 and a trophy.

Competing Chefs

 Chef Itta Werdiger Roth

Chef Itta Werdiger Roth is the chef-partner of Mason & Mug, a kosher artisanal restaurant serving small plates with big flavors. Before Mason & Mug, she ran The Hester, a popular kosher super club and worked as a line cook at Pardes. Her experience in the kitchen and her commitment to creating unique kosher plates will make her a strong competitor this year.  

Chef Katsuji Tanabe 

Chef Katusji Tanabe is the chef-partner of Mexikosher, the first kosher Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. Along with being a mentor for Jewish Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Los Angeles, he is a culinary powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen.  He has competed in and won Food Network’s “Chopped” and  is currently a contestant on “Top Chef Boston”. We are sure he will bring some of that competitive edge to Kosherfest this year.

Chef David Blum 

Chef David Blum is the executive chef at Hartmans, a chain of kosher supermarkets in Toronto. He poses a dual threat in the kitchen as a graduate of both Jerusalem Culinary Institute and George Brown College, where he trained in food and beverage management. His cooking videos are frequently featured on websites such as Chef David is excited bring his brand of cooking tricks and techniques to CKCA's competition. 

Master of Ceremonies: Paula Shoyer 

Paula is a French-trained pastry chef and the author of "The Holiday Kosher Baker." She has appeared on the Food Network’s “Sweet Genius” and has had recipes featured in newspapers and magazines. We are holding our breath for her upcoming cookbook, "The New Passover Menu" and are lucky to have her join us for this event.

Competition Judges: 

The competition will be sponsored for the third year in a row by Jack's Gourmet, who will also be exhibiting at the show. Jack's produces some of the highest quality deli meats, prepared sausages, and sausage blends available in the kosher market today. Chef Jack Silberstein, co-founder of Jack's Gourmet will be serving as a judge for the competition as well.
